With AI agents stepping into autonomous roles, Amazon’s challenge to Perplexity raises broader questions about automation, permission, and digital gatekeeping.

Amazon has filed a lawsuit against Perplexity AI in federal court, seeking to block the use of Perplexity’s agentic AI tool, Comet, from making purchases on Amazon’s platform. The complaint alleges that the startup violated Amazon’s terms of service and failed to identify its software agent when acting on behalf of users. The dispute follows a cease-and-desist letter sent earlier this year and highlights the legal complexities arising as AI agents begin performing tasks online that were traditionally handled by humans.

Perplexity maintains that its system acts transparently on behalf of users and has positioned the suit as a competitive response to its own AI offerings. Amazon, meanwhile, is developing its own AI tools with purchasing capabilities, including features still in testing. The outcome of the case may have broader implications for how platform terms, automation boundaries, and digital agents are interpreted in commercial contexts.

“It’s fairly straightforward that third-party applications .. should operate openly and respect service provider decisions whether or not to participate” — LaraHendrickson, Amazon
